These events comprise a series of sections, defined by markers, set out on a smooth field with undulations and some fairly steep areas and a variety of terrain, long grass, short grass, damp areas etc. Competitors must attempt each section without stopping or touching one of the pairs of markers, each pair being known as a gate. Any road going car, front or rear wheel drive, rally car, kit car, in fact almost anything that is safe, roadworthy and has an MOT and uses standard road tyres can be used. If the vehicle is trailered to the event it need not be taxed or insured.
